A good EOFY is boring. This checklist makes it boring: cut-off, stock, assets, payroll, tax, lock.

Four weeks before 30 June

Decisions, not tasks.

Agree the cut-off calendar with finance, operations and your accountant
Confirm stocktake method and dates, and freeze item master changes
Review open purchase orders and goods received not invoiced
Review aged debtors and decide on provisions

The last week

Transactions that must be in the right period.

Post goods receipts and shipments to the correct period
Post accruals and prepayments with a standard template
Run fixed-asset depreciation and review disposals and additions
Reconcile bank, credit cards and clearing accounts
Reconcile GST control accounts to the BAS

Payroll and super

Employers finalise Single Touch Payroll data for each employee, which is due by 14 July for most employers. Reconcile payroll liabilities, leave provisions and super payable to the ledger before finalisation.

Reconcile PAYG withholding and super liabilities
Review leave balances and provisions
Confirm finalisation with your payroll provider and your tax agent

Close and lock

Once reconciliations are signed off, lock the period.

Run the trial balance and review variances to prior year and budget
Post year-end adjustments and obtain accountant sign-off
Lock posting periods and restrict access to the closed year
Archive the reconciliation pack and the cut-off evidence

What to fix before next year

List every manual step that hurt this year and either automate it or make it a documented checklist item. The best time to design next year's close is the week after this year's.

Frequently asked questions

When is STP finalisation due?

For most employers, by 14 July. Confirm the current deadline for your circumstances with the ATO or your tax agent.

Should we lock the period in Business Central?

Yes, after sign-off. Locking prevents late postings that change reported figures. Use controlled allowed-posting dates for exceptions.

Can you run a review of our close process?

Yes. A close review is a short engagement that maps your close, finds manual steps and proposes fixes.

General information, not tax advice. Confirm deadlines and obligations with the ATO or your registered tax agent.
